RSI Prevention and Treatment for Typing Wrist Pain
Typing Wrist Pain
Typing wrist pain is prone to people who spend all day typing such as writers and those who work with word processors.
Computer operators are unfortunately at highest risk of RSI, and therefore are in most need of regular exercise even if they have never seemed to experience strain.
Exercises for Computer Operators|Typing Wrist Pain
Make sure the position of your thumb is left to its natural inclination to the side. Wrists must be paid close attention to as well. Leave them in as neutral a position as possible as they will hold the most tension when raised at an unnatural angle when doing activities like typing. This can create undue strain on the muscles in the forearm. Essentially the forearm is being asked to support the wrist for long periods of time at the same angle and this is unnatural – the body cannot cope under normal circumstances over a long period of time.
The angle and ergonomics of your keyboard should be considered so that the wrists aren’t arched backwards too much. This shortens the muscles in the top of the forearm and makes it more difficult for them to lift your fingers off the keyboard. Always place your keyboard at or below elbow level. Preferably the back of your hands should not be any more than 10 degrees tilted in relation to your forearms. Try a keyboard and mouse that are more ergonomically designed and therefore less strenuous on the hands and arm.
Postural factors|Typing Wrist Pain
Many sufferers find that employing good posture will make a big difference in preventing or easing pain, as well as regulating the rest of your position/posture to achieve the lowest stress.
This exercise should help a little. Take time at lease once an hour for a couple of minutes to step away from the keyboard. Stand up, reach your hands up as if you were trying to touch the ceiling (really stretch), roll your shoulders back and down, arch your back, then take a couple of steps around your chair.
What happens when the stretches stop working?
It’s possible that you, like many others in your field, may find the stretches and exercises available just aren’t effective in relieving the source of the pain for optimum relief while typing and computer operating. In this case things may have advanced to a more serious condition. More damage to your nerves has been caused, and you will need help from a specialist to treat your condition.
