Prevention | preventing rsi
Many people only experience a little bit of discomfort, or loss of sensitivity when they first begin having symptoms of RSI. Unfortunately, these initial symptoms, which are key in preventing and healing RSI, are often ignored as they have little impact. RSI's are progressive injuries, usually intensifying in pain, frequency and regularity if the source of the injury is not tackled and treatment is not sought. It is important to note that although the pain may be manageable at the moment (and it may disappear for large periods of your day), it can easily develop into a more severe case that eventually may be irreversible.
Simple Keys to Prevention
- Take periodic breaks
- If it hurts, stop!
- Take the time to organize your thoughts before working to avoid unnecessary typing
- Optimize your workstation
- Watch your posture
- Use proper typing technique
- Pace yourself
- Perform stretching exercises frequently while working or performing activities that bring on the pain
- Limit mouse usage
- Don’t strain for hard-to-reach key combinations
- Rest your elbows and wrists when not typing
